Wild Side: Woodland wildflowers

As the spring season marches on and the woodland canopy fills with leaves shading the forest floor, our wildflowers are responding with sort of a migration, too.

Many of our woodland wildflowers have already had their days, exploding with blooms in April and May.

As late spring and summer take hold, it’s time for the wildflowers along our waterways, wet and dry meadows, and prairies to start showing off.

Shown here is the showy bloom of larger blue flag, a member of the iris family that, though it’s a wildflower, resembles a garden iris. Look for it in late May in our marshes and open wet areas, blooming atop sword-like leaves as much as three feet tall. This image was captured in the Oak Openings Region.

The variety of wildflowers to be seen along our region’s roadsides and nature trails is truly amazing. The colorful parade of blooms that started with the first warm days of spring will keep changing and pleasing us well into the fall.
