Wild Side: A song of chorus frogs & spring peepers

With the warmer days of spring starting to make an appearance, nature is responding with new activity. Some species are returning after a winter-long absence, others are stirring awake, and many of them are singing songs of love.

Wildlife of all kinds is sensing that it’s time to get that next generation going. Some announce loudly for all to hear that they’re ready for love.

Take a pause and just listen. It’s a good bet that if you’re anywhere near a vernal pool or wetland, there are frogs – the males – singing long and loud, hoping to attract a female.

Most of your Metroparks have wetlands that host those chorus frogs and spring peepers. While you’re out, don’t forget to be on the lookout for the early spring wildflowers. And remember, too, that the University-Parks Trail and both legs of the Wabash-Cannonball Trail are “Rails to Trails” projects bordered by ditches that often provide perfect habitats for these frogs and toads.
