We bundle up for the bitter cold that sometimes comes to us in the depth of winter, or perhaps just stay indoors and avoid it altogether. Our winter wildlife has no choice but to face it head-on.
For those birds who have chosen to stay here and weather the cold, survival becomes a challenge, a challenge that grows exponentially when temperatures and wind chills plunge below zero. It’s times like these that the backyard feeding stations we enjoy become extra important to our active winter wildlife.
For those who put out a single feeder, the best seed to fill it is black oil-type sunflower seed, which is favored by the widest variety of species. Other excellent choices include thistle seed, suet, and roasted unsalted peanut pieces (or those in the shell).
