Obituary For Richard D. Heban

Deacon Richard “Dick” Donald Heban, 93, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, September 6, 2024. After nearly 30 years, he is finally reunited with wife, Doris, who passed away on June 4, 1995. He was born August 11, 1931, to Norbert and Mary Louise (Jursa) Heban in Toledo, Ohio. Dick graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1949. He served in the Army during the Korean War where he was stationed in Germany. He married Doris Ann Donohue on March 2, 1957.

He was ordained a Deacon in the Catholic Church in 1980 and served at St. Joseph’s Maumee. One of the many experiences he had as a Deacon was the privilege to baptize all 7 of his grandchildren. Dick often said that his calling to be a Deacon not only came to him but to his wife Doris, as well. A favorite ministry of theirs was to take the family to area nursing homes to distribute communion to residents on Sunday mornings. Often, his homilies focused on his family life.

He was a glass supervisor at Libby Owens Ford from 1949 – 1980. In 1967, he found an interest in working on typewriters. After repairing them in the basement of the family home for 6 years, he opened Heban’s Office Equipment in 1973.

In his younger years, he was a talented bowler and spent many weekends travelling with his family to bowling tournaments in the Eastern part of the United States. Growing up, he excelled at playing baseball and softball with his brothers on various federation teams. But perhaps his greatest enjoyment was found in roller skating, dancing, and going to hot air balloon festivals with Doris. He was an intense fan of the University of Notre Dame athletics and of the Cleveland Indians and Browns, and, along with his brothers, offered many suggestions on how they might improve their performance. Later in life, he enjoyed attending sporting events for all his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris (Donohue), granddaughter Catherine Heban, brother Norb Heban, and sister-in-law Judy Heban.

Dick is survived by his children Donna (Jim) Albright, Rich Heban, and Dennis (Denise) Heban; grandchildren Dan (Mitzi) Revill, Jake (Stephanie) Revill, Anna Revill, Nicholas Heban, Corinne Heban, and Elizabeth Heban; and great-granddaughter Alexa Revill; brother Steve (Ann) Heban, sisters Nancy (Marc) Poupard, and Marie (Ron) Groves.

The family would like to thank Visiting Angels for providing care for Dick during the last several years.

Visitation will be held Sunday, September 15, 2024, from 4 to 8 pm with the rosary prayed at 7 pm at Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St., Maumee, Ohio. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Daniel E. Thomas, Bishop of the Diocese of Toledo, on Monday, September 16, 2024, at 10:30 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 104 W. Broadway St, Maumee, OH 43537. Reverand Eric Schild will give the homily. The Rite of Committal and burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Maumee.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maumee.
