Obituary For John Harry Crandall
John Harry “JC” Crandall, age 86, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, October 11, 2024. John was born, the third of six children to Harry and Agnes Crandall. He was a 1955 graduate of Burnham High School in Sylvania and of the University of Toledo, where he was a member of TKE. John married Mary Susan Wiedemann on May 18, 1963 and they settled in Sylvania where they raised their five boys. John worked in sales for Ohio Gas before briefly serving as a police officer in Sylvania. He then began a career in engineering at R.A. Finch and Associates before entering the public sector with Lucas County Engineers under George Wilson. He served as Chief Deputy/Director of the Lucas County Engineering Department where he was involved in various projects, such as the Millard Overpass, Dussell Drive Interchange, and Veterans Glass City Skyway Bridge.
John was extremely community minded and strived to make Sylvania a place where families and businesses could thrive. He served as the first president of both the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District (SAJRD) and the Sylvania Metro Hockey Association. He was an active member of various other boards such as Lourdes University Board of Trustees, and St. Joseph Parish Council. He also served in the elected positions of Sylvania School Board and Sylvania Township Trustee. Because of John’s continued dedication to the Sylvania area, Sylvania’s mayor, Craig Stough, proclaimed June 18th as John Crandall Day.
JC’s most treasured positions were that of devoted husband, and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His support and patience were endless. He will be forever remembered for his iconic Christmas gifts featuring JC grab bags and duct taped wrapping. Some of the family’s most memorable moments come from their annual vacation to Tennessee, where JC fearlessly led the grandchildren on skunk hunts and through putt-putt battles before becoming a ruthless Euchre competitor with the other adults. He was a hockey dad through and through, and loved watching his sons and grandchildren on the ice, often keeping team stats on his ever-present notepad. He would also make appearances on soccer fields, at dance team events, and any school event in which his grandchildren were featured.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Susan “Sue”; son, David; brothers, James and Joseph; sisters, Joanne (Jerry) Cwiklewski and Judy Crandall, brothers-in-law, William, John, and Pete Wiedemann; and sister-in-law, Gretchen O’Loughlin. He is survived by sons, Bob (Sue), Matt (Kristen), Dan (Amy) and Kevin; grandchildren, Drew (Courtney), Emma, Maizy, Livia, David, Logan, Levi, and Zac; great-grandson, Jawone Jr.; sister, Jane (Steve) Spencer; sisters-in-law, Margie and Pat Wiedemann, Judy Neipp, and Nancy Farber.
Visitation will be from 4-8:00 pm Friday, October 18, 2024 at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Road). A memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, October 19th at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5373 Main St. Sylvania. Inurnment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
