Obituaries

Janet Mary Landwehr, a longtime resident of Perrysburg, passed away on December 17, 2024, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Born in 1946 to Irene and Dr. Walter M. Wick, D.D., a Bishop of the Lutheran Church in America, she spent most of her youth in Indianapolis.

Jan graduated from Wittenberg University in 1968 with a BA in Psychology, was president of Delta Gamma sorority, and a member of Psi Chi (psychology), Beta Beta Beta (biology), and Ivy Ring honoraries. Nominated by her alma mater, she was selected as an Outstanding Young Woman of America in 1976. Jan also earned a Masters in Social Work degree from the University of Michigan.

It was at a college party that Jan met her future husband and best friend, John T. Landwehr. In 1968, they wed in Indianapolis, celebrated their 30th anniversary traveling in Europe, and enjoyed 42 years of marriage, before he passed away in 2011.

For many years, Jan was a professor at the University of Toledo where she taught 21 different social work courses. She served as Coordinator of the Mental Health Technology Program and as Adjunct Coordinator of the Social Work Technology Program. Before that, Jan began her professional career at Lucas County Children Services, where she held positions as caseworker, supervisor of a dependency, neglect and abuse unit, and supervisor of the Foster Homes Department.

Community service was always a part of Jan’s life. She served as President of the Voluntary Action Center Board and Junior League Chairman of Action for Newborns. She was involved in the startup of the CASA program in Lucas County and Project Counterstroke, a stroke rehabilitation awareness program. Sworn in as an officer of the court, Jan tirelessly spent hours at Lucas County Juvenile Court, helping children. Jan was also a hands-on volunteer, supporting parents of infants in the NICU at Toledo Hospital.

Jan enjoyed tennis, paddle tennis, and golf outdoors, and puzzles and board games indoors – especially to QUIZZIFY her family in Scrabble. She was a member of Carranor Hunt and Polo Club and Belmont Country Club. She also loved gardening, serving as President of the Country Garden Club of Perrysburg. She was a member of the Delta Gamma Alumnae Association, Toledo Bar Auxiliary, and a sustaining member of the Junior League of Toledo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, a sister, and two brothers. She is survived by son John Jr. (Karen), of Virginia, and daughter Jennifer Landwehr Graham, of Perrysburg. She was “Maudie” to her much beloved grandchildren, Megan, JT, and Todd. Also surviving Jan is her sister Betty Darbro of Indianapolis.

A memorial service will be held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Perrysburg on Saturday December 28, 2024, at 11:00am with an informal gathering thereafter.
