Obituary For George H. Smith

George H. Smith, 85, of Perrysburg OH, passed away on August 23, 2024. He was born in Toledo OH on July 7, 1939 to parents Calvin J. and Ella F. Smith.

George’s adult employment career began as a parts manager at Carroll Motor Sales, a Buick / Pontiac Dealership (1957-1965). At the General Motors Toledo Plant, he held several positions including supervisor and financial analyst (1965-1992) and retired. Following he became a residential real estate appraiser for Martin+Wood Appraisal Services and retired (1992-2023).

A 1957 graduate of Sylvania High School, George joined the Marine Corps Reserve from 1959-1965; and was a graduate of the University of Toledo in 1965. Through the years he held several professional licenses: casualty and life insurance (1975-1980’s); a stock brokers license (1980-1997); a real estate license starting in 1976 and adding the designation Senior Certified Appriser; an agent with Wells Bowen Realtors / Howard Hanna (1997-2023).

He and his wife, Bonnie, owned an antique shop, Little Old Shoppe, where they did furniture stripping / refinishing for 4 years part-time. Sensing it was intruding on their family time they opted to close the business in 1973, and sold the single-story building on Central Avenue; which they had built two years before they ceased operation.

George was a kind gentleman with a sense of humor. A reserved Christian testimony of his relationship with the Lord was a quiet witness to others for decades. He served on several church boards throughout the years.

Last year and this, George would often say, “He was nearing his expiration date.”

Sad news, He did! His expiration date for his life here on earth. Good news, He is in heaven where there is no expiration date as he has eternal life with the Lord Jesus Christ.

He loved his family; his hobby was working. Becoming an avid reader during the last year of his life brought him well-deserved relaxation, comfort, and peace.

George is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Bonnie J. Smith; three daughters: Lisa M. VanderVlucht (Daniel) Perrysburg; Tana M. Koskinen (Wayne) Perrysburg; Nina M. Smith (Jeanine Scalero) Newport Beach CA; one son: Dean A. Smith (Kelly) Toledo; nine grandchildren: Chelsea Deichmann (James); Kayla Mohler (Nyle); Gabrielle Smith, Ella Koskinen, Léna Koskinen, Jena Koskinen, Maria Smith, Samuel Scalero, Katherine Scalero; five great-grandchildren: Naomi Deichmann, Cash Mohler, Hannah Deichmann, Mohler twins Brooks and Cameryn; and arrival soon of Deichmann twins in January 2025.

Additional survivors include: a nephew, Kevin M. Smith of Perrysburg; a niece, Kandice A. Miller of Sylvania. Also several great nephews and great nieces; plus many cousins.

George was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Calvin E. and Donelda J. Smith.
