Obituary For Daniel Schick, Jr.
On Monday August 14, 2023, Daniel Schick Jr. passed away peacefully in his home in New Dover, Ohio, after an extended battle with pancreatic cancer.
In his short time on earth, Danny accomplished many things. Dan’s proudest accomplishment was raising his two wonderful children, Olivia and Benjamin Schick. Dan was extremely proud that Olivia played softball at Ohio Dominican University and is studying to be a nurse like her Aunt Sue, and that Benjamin already owns and operates his own small business in Delaware, Ben’s Landscaping, while studying construction management at OSU-Marion.
In total, Dan ran 10 marathons, qualifying multiple times for the Boston Marathon. In addition to running, Dan loved the outdoors. He especially loved hunting and fishing with his son. Whether it was duck hunting or perch fishing, deer hunting or catching walleye, depending on the season, Dan would be enjoying and tagging the biggest deer, bagging more ducks, or landing the most fish. This was always to everyone else’s frustration and admiration, because he always made it look so easy.
Dan was a carpenter by trade. Dan worked for Corna Kokosing for almost 30 years, where he was a superintendent. Dan once called himself a master builder in jest, but it was a true statement. In addition to many of his own projects, he would often find himself helping others first. He helped pour concrete, put on roofs, install bathrooms, build kitchens, install windows, swap out engines in a car, install an air condition, and more. Dan was someone who proved and embodied that you can do anything with your own two hands, and that through sheer force of will you can do anything you set your mind to. Dan was the person you called for help, and the magnitude of this loss cannot be overstated.
Finally, Dan loved to travel. Dan’s idea of travel was not a beach in Florida. Dan’s idea of travel was backpacking and portaging a canoe on Isle Royale in the middle of Lake Superior; traveling to Yellowstone; or crossing the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in a canoe he made himself by steaming the wood for bending in his kitchen. That was Dan. He made everything around him better, and he had so much more he planned on doing.
Dan is survived by his children Benjamin Schick and Olivia Schick, his widow Dawn, his mother Wanda Schick, his sister Susan and brother Brian (Sandy), and his partner of five years Melissa Tewart-Darwin.
Dan is preceded in death by his brother David, his father Dan Sr., his paternal grandparents John Schick Sr. and Virginia Schick, and his maternal grandparents Francis Zuchowski Sr. and Alfreda Zuchowski.
A showing will take place from Friday, August 18, 2023 5PM to 8PM at the Witzler-Shank-Walker Funeral home located at 222 E South Boundary St. in Perrysburg, OH. A visitation on Saturday, August 19, 2023 from 9AM-10AM and funeral services from 10AM-11AM will be held the next morning at All Saints Catholic Church located at 628 Lime City Rd. in Rossford, OH. A funeral procession will take Dan to be buried next to his brother David at Calvary Cemetery located at 2224 Dorr St. in Toledo, OH. Following the burial there will be a short luncheon from 1PM-3PM back at All Saints Catholic Church.
The family asks that any donations be made to Ducks Unlimited or Friends of the Boundary Waters on Dan’s behalf.
