Obituary For Charles Edward Bailey
Charles Edward Bailey was born on May 7, 1931, in the small Tennessee town of Lawrenceburg. On October 18, 2023 at the age of 92, Charlie passed away peacefully after a life well-lived.
Charlie spent his younger years living, logging and farming in the hills and hollers of Tennessee. At 18, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served in Korea. Charlie was wounded by shrapnel and earned a Purple Heart, along with multiple other service awards, and was honorably discharged in September of 1952 with the rank of Sergeant.
In November of 1952 he moved to Toledo, Ohio in search of a job. While Charlie found a job at St. Regis Paper Company, he also found the love of his life when he met Kathryn Stevens. They were married on January 23, 1954 and were forever faithful for 69 years.
3 years at St. Regis and 38 at General Mills, he was not one to shy away from hard work. Charlie could often be found in the garden, taking care of his yard, fixing up his house, making sure his cars were in tip top shape and always willing to lend a hand. Ever the ‘country boy’, Charlie loved country music, NASCAR, sweets, Coors beer, a good hotdog and southern cooking ~ especially ‘edgy’ biscuits.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Kathryn (affectionately known as Renee) and loved by many generations of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by parents, Edgar and Iva Kelsey Bailey; sister, Vivian Bailey, and a myriad of family and friends who welcomed him home.
Ever the Southern gentleman, he did have a stubborn streak and didn’t like a lot of ‘fuss.’ Therefore, in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (Toledo).
Charlie’s family wishes to thank the staff of the Landings of Oregon for the kindness and care provided to him and for taking care of his beloved wife after his passing, friend and neighbor Cathy Martin (‘Miss New York’) for her years of care and Careline Hospice for helping him on his journey home ~ on his own terms, peacefully.
Funeral services for Charles will be conducted by Father Larry Legakis at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 25, 2023 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 740 N. Superior St., Toledo, Ohio with visitation at the church from 9-10 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park, Sylvania, Ohio.
