On this episode of Behind the Byline, host Jaden Jefferson has a conversation with Dr. David Kennedy about the human health impact of algal bloom toxins.
Kennedy, associate professor of medicine at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, also talks about a free public lecture he’s presenting at the University of Toledo Lake Erie Center on Thursday, March 27. Joining him are two of his colleagues, Dr. Joan Duggan and Dr. Steven Haller.
The lecture’s topic is Great Lakes, Healthy Lives: What We Know About the Health Impacts of Harmful Algal Blooms and How You Can Drive Change.
Kennedy talks about:
- historical discovery of algal blooms, initially found in agricultural and farming settings
- historical evidence linking algal bloom toxins with humans in Brazil who had chronic kidney disease due to contaminated water
- his team’s current and ongoing studies to understand how humans are exposed to algal bloom and how it affects our health
- and how attendees can contribute to advancing relevant research through the Great Lakes Aerosol Monitoring Research Study
